Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’m considering therapy, but unsure if it’s really what I need right now.

First of all, thank you for coming here during this time in your life. Reaching out can feel daunting since there are initially many unknowns. We want to answer your questions and help you get set up easily.

In our work, we’ve found just about everyone benefits from therapy. Often clients come with a particular concern in mind, but quickly find themselves on a journey exploring many other facets of their lives. The great benefit of this process is not only working out your initial concern and gaining tools to help in your particular situation, but also gaining insight about yourself, your life, and your relationships. When done in a committed way, we believe therapy has a long reach and lasting effects.

  • Can I see the same effects in talking with family or friends or reading books?

We never want to downplay the power of the relationships already in your life. These are so important and even a big part of what we may explore together. And we love books too! However, sometimes people need an unbiased and non-judgmental third party. We have dedicated years of training and practice to help you learn new skills and navigate difficult areas in your life, your relationships, and within yourself. We offer a real and unique relationship, that is also a professional and confidential one, to help you explore difficult topics.

  • How does it work? What is expected of me in sessions?

Typically individual sessions are 50-55 minutes long. Couples’ sessions may be longer. Your therapist will ask you to speak freely about your concerns and will ask thoughtful questions. This is a protected, confidential space for you to do this. Depending on your concerns and what you’re looking for in therapy, your therapist may give you ‘homework’ or they may not. Your therapist may lead you through activities or prompts in session to help further your exploration.

We view therapy as a collaborative process. We are walking with you, not prescribing your healing and growth. We respect the timing your story needs and are honored to journey with you. Although no one can guarantee results, the more open and committed you are to the process the more progress you’ll likely see.

  • I think I want to set up an initial appointment. Where do I go from here?

We’re excited you feel ready to embark on this journey. If you do not have a particular therapist in mind, reading our therapists’ bios may be helpful in deciding who you feel could be a good fit. We believe finding a good fit is important and are here to help if you have further questions.

We recommend having a couple of therapists in mind since we want to find a good fit within your schedule as well. Or, if you think Bareiter Counseling Center is the place for you but do not have a preference on therapist, that is fine too! Either way, you’re now ready to schedule online via our portal, or contact us directly. We are looking forward to meeting you and joining you during this time in your life.
