Sharon Exum

Hi, I’m Sharon. I understand that making a decision to begin counseling can be an intimidating undertaking. So I strive to create a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment for all who come to see me. I value the relationship we will develop as an important element to the exploration, growth and/or healing that you desire.

How I Help

During our sessions, I seek to help you go deeper into your awareness and understanding of the parts of yourself that result in the behaviors, thoughts and feelings on which you want to focus. I tend to ask questions that explore past experiences, familial influences, and patterns of interaction to allow you to reflect, discover and address hindrances to the well-being you desire. I believe that each of my clients has the ability to make deep and meaningful changes, so I work with you in a way that honors your past and supports your future growth.

My Specialties

Couples & Premarital Counseling

I understand that you want to feel close to your partner and sometimes need support to help make that happen. I am one of only a very few Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapists (EFT) in the Charlotte area. In using the EFT approach, I strive to help you thoughtfully identify and deeply explore how you and your partner get stuck in negative patterns that create disconnection in your relationship. I’ll do this by helping you tune into your important feelings, perceptions and needs and then help you talk about them in ways that better enable you to hear one another, reconnect, and strengthen your relationship.

Premarital counseling is designed to give you a solid foundation from which to build a happy, healthy, and secure marital relationship. I will help you identify the strengths of your relationship and work through areas of difficulty that are likely to be damaging to your future marriage. I will tailor your sessions to your specific relationship needs.

Life Transitions, Anxiety/Stress & Work/Life Issues

I have experience working with individuals who are struggling with diverse challenges, ranging from temporarily overwhelming stressors to life-altering losses or circumstances. I strive to help you explore the roots of these difficulties and find a greater sense of wellness. As well, my prior career experience gives me a distinct insight into the demands and pressures of corporate culture that may impact the other areas of your life.

Christian Counseling

Having obtained a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, I’m uniquely trained as a Christian counselor to integrate faith and spirituality into therapy if you desire. However, I am committed to do all I can to make you feel welcome and free from judgment regardless of your beliefs. Whether we integrate your own faith and spirituality into therapy in our time together will be up to you.

More About Me

I am a wife and mother. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, serving in various ministries within the church I attend, and watching TV talent competition shows. I received my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University, and subsequently enjoyed a successful career as an engineer and engineering manager before stepping out to follow my heart for helping others.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. In addition to being certified in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), I have advanced training in Internal Family Systems.
