Shannon Miller

Hi I am Shannon. Sometimes it is hard to understand and figure out why we behave the way we do. Sometimes we need help understanding and making sense of our thoughts, feelings and actions. Additionally, we need that help to be provided consistently, non-judgmentally, and with empathy.

How I Help

I have appreciated an insight-oriented approach to counseling. This approach first seeks to help us as individuals understand some of our underlying motivations concerning why we “act” the way we do. Additionally, it seeks to connect our past circumstances to present patterns of relating and coping. When we as individuals grow in our awareness of what is underneath our thoughts, feelings, and actions we are able to choose to do things differently in the future. This awareness in addition to the therapeutic relationship allows us to have experiences of increased mental freedom, greater capacity to tolerate frustration, and improved ability in navigating and enjoying relationships.

My Specialties

Relationships are hard and require intentionality and work. Couple’s counseling offers a safe space to work on disconnection, miscommunication, and reactivity. Often couples can stay stuck in negative patterns of relating, which can end up feeling defeating. I can help facilitate interactions that help lead to greater intimacy, security and connection within the relationship.

Do you ever notice experiencing emotional pain or distress within yourself and sometimes your relationships? This pain can cause you to feel stuck and it can start to take on a life of its own, with ways of coping that no longer seem to be beneficial. I can walk alongside of you as we are curious and start to understand some of what is at work underneath this pain and distress. Overtime we work towards strengthening aspects of the self that allow you to experience more freedom.

More About Me

When I am not in at BCC, I enjoy paddle boarding, reading, and studying the Old Testament. I also love the country of Haiti and participating with organizations that are working towards building economic capacity in that region.

In addition to my appreciation for insight-oriented therapy, my seminary training at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary has equipped me to walk alongside individuals looking to integrate their faith in a wholistic way.
